2014 Winter Blast and why you should make it in 2015

The Meridian Health Plan Winter Blast presented by Quicken Loans has come and gone in the city of Detroit.  As per usual, it was an event full of fun and joy in Campus Martius Park, centrally located in the Downtown area of Detroit. The event ran from Friday, February 7th and concluded the evening of Sunday, February 9th. If you missed Winter Blast 2014, then you definitely need to make it for Winter Blast 2015. The highlights include ice sculptures, live music, a fantastic beer tent, and more.

The Winter Classic Has Come and Gone

January 1stAnn Arbor, Michigan—After years of preparation, the Winter Classic has come and gone. Although it didn’t quite go how we wanted, here in Metro-Detroit, Guiness Book of World Records crowd of 105,491 was full of celebration. As we’re sure you’ve heard by now, the Detroit Red Wings lost in a shootout when Toronto Maple Leafs center Tyler Bozak scored a low, stick-side, game winning shot on goaltender, and US Olympian, Jimmy Howard.

Although the Winter Classic was the main event, holiday weekend was full of games and festivities in Downtown Detroit. Fans flocked in from all over the country and well into Canada in order to participate. The Westin Book Cadillac was the home base for Toronto fans who wanted to create a Sea of Blue in the Big House. In Detroit, at the Hockey Town Winterfest, fans enjoyed games of pickup hockey, replica locker rooms, and some lucky ones managed to catch a glimpse of the Stanley Cup. Continue reading

Three Things You Probably Did Not Know About Detroit

I was born and raised in Detroit. In fact, I lived there for nearly all of my life before moving to the suburbs (that”s a topic for a different post). Growing up as a child of the “90s, I didn”t quite understand how Detroit ranked compared to other cities. Slowly but surely it became clear; we didn”t rank well. “What is wrong with Detroit,” I thought, “what is so bad about the city?” I didn”t travel much so it took getting the Internet after I graduated high school to realize what was wrong. The answer was simple; a lot was wrong with Detroit. Instead of focusing on the negative like the rest of the media, I want to take time to talk about a few things that you probably did not know about Detroit. This is by no means an extensive list. It”s more of a few thoughts from a local.
