January 1st—Ann Arbor, Michigan—After years of preparation, the Winter Classic has come and gone. Although it didn’t quite go how we wanted, here in Metro-Detroit, Guiness Book of World Records crowd of 105,491 was full of celebration. As we’re sure you’ve heard by now, the Detroit Red Wings lost in a shootout when Toronto Maple Leafs center Tyler Bozak scored a low, stick-side, game winning shot on goaltender, and US Olympian, Jimmy Howard.
Although the Winter Classic was the main event, holiday weekend was full of games and festivities in Downtown Detroit. Fans flocked in from all over the country and well into Canada in order to participate. The Westin Book Cadillac was the home base for Toronto fans who wanted to create a Sea of Blue in the Big House. In Detroit, at the Hockey Town Winterfest, fans enjoyed games of pickup hockey, replica locker rooms, and some lucky ones managed to catch a glimpse of the Stanley Cup. Continue reading
